The climb over was treacherous. Car doors, hoods, buckled and complained under Elana Sanchez's shoes. The odor of oil and trace smells of gasoline and burnt metal drifted into her nostrils.

Reaching up, Elana grabbed an open door frame and pulled herself up and over the top of the junk pile.

This was the first time Elana had seen the junk pile alley up close. The cars, piled 2 cars highly, more in some places, lined up like guard rails around an open lane.

It wasn't the best place to be. Elana found an instant, nearly subconscious urge hit her. An urge that wanted her to turn around and go back. The urge, which felt like that damnable flight or fight response was resisting her urges to essentially be bait.

Consciously she also was also reminded at just how dire their predicament was. Inside that junk car lane, or on top of it, they were boxed in. Once the Terminator got closer, escaping it would be difficult at best, suicide at worst.

It all depended on Aaron. All their lives did.

Elana laid down behind the biggest, thickest hunk of metal she could find and surveyed the area. She immediately saw the SUV where Ezra and Chad were hiding. She envied their big heavy cover, for the moment anyway. She had lots of cover around her, but was largely stuck.

"Ezra," Elana said into her headset. "Get Chad up to speed, and keep making noise. We gotta keep this thing on us and off Aaron. Sing a song, fire a few rounds, I don't care, just keep your heads down, don't give it a target."

Elana worked to find some cover. Protruding metal, like the hood or engine block of a car, something she could hide behind that might absorb some machine gun fire. Yet something she could peer around and still see the Terminator.

Once she was in position, Elana sat down her M-16 against a car frame and pulled a flare off her belt.

She ripped the end-cover off the red-colored flare, igniting the flare. The hot red burning filled her eyes and lit up her face for a moment. Her eyes turned to the Terminator up the alley.

Standing up just briefly she threw the flare into the center of the alley north of where the trio where hiding and ahead of the Terminator. She was hoping it would move further south towards them to investigate this thermal signature.

For added effect, Elana grabbed a heavy hunk of metal and threw it into the junked cars off to her left on the other side of the lane.

She shouted at the Terminator, "Your momma was a leaf blower tin can! What are you waiting for, come and get it!"

As she shouted, she ducked lower and grabbed up the M-16 again, gripping it tightly with both hands, bracing for whatever would happen next.

Actions: take cover, throw flare and metal junk, be noisy

'Surety is better than speed...'

That thought kept running through Aaron's head as he slowed down his pace. He knew his companions were in imminent danger. But if he stepped on the glass, if he tipped off the T-1 as to his location...

They'd all end up dead.

'This plan is crazy, I hate robots. This plan is crazy, I hate robots.'

The mantra echoed in his mind as he navigated the audible hazard.

'This plan is crazy! I HATE robots!'

When he reaches the end of the pile of junk, Aaron will look around the end to make sure he knows where the T-1 is located.

OOC: Actions: Move at pace required to not heavily risk stepping on glass. If I can reach the end of the junk pile this round, I'll try to note the position of the robot. If not, I...keep going!

Ezra didn't like Chad moving too much with his head injury, but they really didn't have time to get him proper care. In fact, proper care didn't really exist at this point. And may not ever again. So instead the young Virginian man cave the concussed Chad a quick run down of Elena's plan in a quiet voice. "Come on, we have to get this done."

Despite his distaste for the whole thing he did his best to keep the machine headed the right way, but avoid getting turned into Swiss cheese by the metal's big guns.

Post-apocalyptic Los Angeles is a wasteland. It's dead quiet, only the wind rattles something now and again and sometimes gravity might bring a wall to the point where it can no longer support the stories above it. Such a rumble in the distance is often followed by a moment of holding one's breath and waiting silently to see if perhaps it was something other than gravity at work.

But the parking lot in front of the mall was turning into an antithesis of the above. Shouting, weapons fire, explosions, metal banging on metal. From her vantage point atop the pile of cars, Elana had the best seat in the house and she started using it to the advantage of the whole group. Had she not revealed her location to the T-1 it would've rolled around the next car and found Ezra and Chad crouching in wait. As it was now, the terminator's programming ignored the flare, ignored the precious trail of sound and turned its weapons up high.

From where Ezra and Chad were sitting they could just barely hear the expended shell casings fall onto the concrete over the rattling of guns firing up into the row of cars. Holes were being punched into bodywork, the occasional tire blew out and what little glass hadn't shattered yet was showering into the air.

Aaron, who had been walking carefully over the glass, felt his heart racing and in a split moment realised he had a small window of opportunity. He threw caution ot the wind and while he could hear the machineguns firing away he knew the machine couldn't hear him running on the glass shards. He sprinted to the end of the alleyway away from the glass and stopped at the corner where he stood gasping for air while sticking his head around and noting the terminator's location.
In the light of the flare it was firing up high and naturally was looking in the other direction. It looked like the coast was clear for Aaron until the machineguns stopped firing. He would have to be quiet again, but at least there was no glass.

When the guns did stop, Chad looked up at Ezra. "Do we stay? Do we shoot?"

Maybe throwing the flare gave her away, maybe she made too much noise, but it was clear that the Terminator was on to her.

Elana saw the barrels swung up and her way. She lowered her head and covered her eyes with her left arm as the bullets began to fly. The rotating barrels made a buzzing sound that was just bizarre and terrifying as the bullets tore through car frames, blew apart glass, and gashed tires. She felt the metal pile of cars vibrate and reverberate the sound beneath her. She was very conscious of the fact that any one of those bullets could somehow pierce all the metal she was lying on and kill her instantly.

When the barrels finally came to a stop, and the quiet of Los Angeles once again filled the air, Elana felt strange.....Elana felt angry.

All that fear, all that horror, was consciously shoved into the part of her brain that was adrenaline and anger. In that moment, for the first time, she truly hated these machines. She hated them, she hated them worse than the worst ex-boyfriend of her life. She might rip out their wires with her teeth if she could. Blistering red anger swept through her body. She was tired of nearly dying, and tired of all the death around her, and suddenly extremely conscious of who was responsible.

Emotions condensed themselves like a compactor into a rock hard core of pure anger and rage.

When she spoke again, her own voice sounded like someone else as she shouted at the top of her lungs to her nearby comrades with eyes tight with anger, "Shoot the damn thing!! Shoot it shoot it! Make some noise!"

Elana stayed down, laying on the wrecked cars. They were still playing the part of a distraction and they needed to do a better job at it. Right now the Terminator was zeroed in on her.....so be it.

Releasing her grip on the M-16. Elana rolled onto her stomach and planted her hands on either side of her.

She took a couple deep breaths, sweat rolling off her chin.

Elana suddenly pushed down with her arms, propelling herself up onto her knees.

In a split instant, she said aloud to herself, "I'm up, he sees me, I'm down."

In a split second, she fell forward flat onto her stomach against the cars once again, hopefully having presented a target just long enough to cause the Terminator to open fire.

Actions: pop up just long enough to present a target (in the time it takes for her to say that phrase), then take cover

Ezra paused before he answered, weighing the options. Before he had time to answer Elena told them to fire, making the decision first. "I guess we fire." Raising up, the doctor lifted his assault rifle and took aim at the hulking piece of metal. I hope this thing can be taken down swiftly he thought as he squeezed the trigger.

Aaron was breathing hard. Hard enough that when the firing stopped, he had to force himself to hold his breath, and release it slowly, carefully, quietly.

Quietly quietly.

So strange how quiet it was. Were this not the end of all things old, Aaron might like the quiet. After all, Los Angeles is normally so loud. People, cars, animals factories, air conditioners, everything. Loud loud loud.

But now, it was as quiet as an isolated mountain path. Were it not so terrible, it might be beautiful.

He knew he'd need to move quietly, even with no glass, but...

There! His comrades were firing. This was his chance.

Aaron started moving, working to stay somewhat quiet, but also trying to move as quickly as possible. After all, any shots that missed the metal monstrosity might strike his own flesh.

Actions: Move across lane. As quietly as possible while still crossing the entire distance this round.

Initiative order [HP left] (Extra Defense and Reflex modifiers from kneeling and cover)
Elana [24] (Defense modifier: +9; Ref modifier: +3)
Ezra [22] (DM: +6; RM: +2)
Aaron [25] (None)
Chad [20] (DM: +6; RM +2)
T-1 [???] (???)

IC:

Elana popped her head over the hood of the car she was kneeling behind and soon she heard the whirring of rotating barrels getting ready to fire. She ducked just as the bullets started flying.

At the same time, Ezra peered over his own cover and started firing at the T-1 but his bullets didn't scathe the machine.

Aaron saw his window of opportunity and took it. He ran straight across and reached the other side with no indication that he had been spotted or heard by the machine. He stopped as he banged into the car which he knew would start and work.

Chad followed Ezra's example and after scrambling to his feet he also started firing on the terminator. His shotgun bucked and the pellets scratched the armor plates on the front of the buckethead but nothing happened.

The machine's answer didn't wait long as it started sending more bullets up to where Elana was sitting. The bullets harmlessly sailed wide of its mark or stuck into the engine block behind which the police woman was taking her reprieve.

The Terminator was still firing at Elana. Bullets tore through the metal all around her, creating a sickening grinding sound.

Elana grabbed the nearest loose piece of metal she could find, a plate, a door frame, a strip, anything. Laying on her side, she  hefted it into the air so the Terminator could see it and waved it back and forth. She hoped that exposing the moving metal would keep the Terminator firing.

Elana was already starting to wonder how much ammunition the Terminator carried...could...would...it run out? That was probably too much to hope for, but it seemed inclined to keep firing. For now that worked in her favor.

"Hey hey!" Elana shouted. "Skynet is nothing...you're nothing...you understand English? Huh?"

Aaron almost smiled in victory.

Quickly, he opened the door and hopped into the truck. Once inside, he extracted the charges on his person, and started preparing them.

OOC: Actions: Get in truck, extract charges, start Demolitions checks if I can. If not, I'll start that next round.

His rounds weren't hurting the damned thing in the slightest - it was like throwing rocks at an old Flying Fortress. Damn it. He kept firing, slowly however, to conserve ammo. If they survived this they'd still need all the rounds they could get. We wont be producing it like we did before.

As Elana started shouting and swinging a piece of metal around to grab the machine's attention, Ezra and Chad kpet firing directly at the machine. This time they were more successful and Chad's shotgun pellets struck the machine's head causing it to reconsider its programming directives.

Unknown to Aaron, who sat in the truck rolling off two feet of kneadable explosives and placing his charges in them, the machine started returning fire. Bullets pelted the car they were hiding behind but it wasn't coming close to hurting any of its attackers.

Aaron finally finished his work and made sure he had the detonator close on his person and ready to put to good use. Everything else was packed safely in the backpack again on the front passenger seat and the explosive dough ahd been kneaded into a ring which could be tossed over any of the machine's extremities with ease.

Aaron smiles...then frowns.

'I really don't want to die today....let's hope I don't.'

With that, he will reach over and start the truck.

As soon as the engine turns and the vehicle is running, Aaron will shift it into drive and apply his best speed possible into getting that pickup away from where it was.

Elana could still hear the sound of the Terminator's rotary barrel machine guns blazing away, but for the first time, it wasn't at her.

It took a long second for that to dawn on her. She laid there on her side, waving a piece of metal. Seconds before, the Terminator had been blazing away at the pile of cars and Elana had been pure with rage, momentarily forgetting that at any moment, a single unlucky bullet could pierce some weak point in the metal around her and kill her instantly.

The stream of bullets was now directed elsewhere.

The thought was actually a concern for the Los Angeles Police Officer. Had Aaron been spotted? Was he dead?

Elana dropped the piece of metal that she had been hoisting like a flag, and rolled over onto her stomach. She spared a glance around her and saw the ping ping flashes of rounds striking the car that Ezra and Chad were hiding behind. The Terminator was letting them have it.

Their cover wasn't as good as Elana's, and that worried her. The expression on her face turned from anger to concern and then determination in the blink of an eye.

"Stay down!" she shouted to her two comrades as a bead of sweat dripped off her face.

Chad and Ezra had been working to get the Terminator's attention when it had Elana pinned down. Now the reverse situation was in play. Elana needed to keep the Terminator occupied while the duo behind the car tried to stay alive.

Grabbing the M-16, Elana sat up into a kneeling position, the metal paneling complained and buckled under her knee. She tucked the M-16 into her shoulder and peered down the sights. Elana aimed the assault rifle at the Terminator's head, and fired a single round.

If and when the Terminator switched targets back to her, she made sure that she could drop like a ragdoll back onto the pile of metal.

Actions: come up into kneeling position and fire M-16, drop behind cover if attacked

Initiative order [HP left]
Elana [24]
Ezra [22]
Aaron [25]
Chad [20]
T-1 [???]

As Ezra lay in wait of what was going to happen he heard a shot coming from Elana's hiding place up high. Even though he couldn't see the machine, the doctor could hear the change in the terminator's internal mechanics after the bullet had struck.

Aaron tried to start the engine and even though it was reluctant, he got it going almost straight away. He put the car in reverse and drove out of the rubble pile and lined the pick-up up with the middle aisle. He could almost see the T-1 and got ready to floor the pedal and race into the machine.

Despite getting shot at, Chad wasn't going to let down after already causing some harm to the machine. He pumped the shotgun and blasted another shell of pellets at the T-1. The result was just as significant as the last time but by now the machine was starting to find itself cornered and outgunned.

It started to roll back towards Aaron's end of the aisle, hoping to lose line of sight with as many of its enemies as possible. It kept pouring fire onto the car behind which Chad and Ezra were hiding. Chad was quite well-aware of the machine's intentions and kept his head down while the car was beaten up some more.

Elana fired the M-16 and ducked back down.

She immediately heard the Terminator begin to move away. That was a problem. If the Terminator saw Aaron, then he was in real trouble.

The LAPD officer had counted on the Terminator staying frustratingly determined to pursue and destroy them (hince...the name). Elana didn't think they had damaged it enough to contemplate pulling out.

Caution...it was a new trait in these machines that she had never before observed, if that is what she was observing now.

Machine gun rounds continued to slam into the car that Ezra and Chad were hiding behind. There wasn't much those two could do but continue to be a punching bag and get an occasional shot off in the Terminator's direction. But that was something at least.

Elana considered a change of tactics, perhaps pulling back and giving the Terminator a rabbit to chase. But anything like that could prove deadly to Ezra and Chad, caught in the lane of wreckage as they tried to run away.

With a grim expression on her sweaty face, she decided to press on with the current plan and hinge their bets on their demolition man Aaron.

Tucking the M-16 into her shoulder, staring down the sights, she stood up and took aim at the Terminator's armored chest.

She pulled the trigger, then dropped back down onto the car rubble to avoid a nasty hail of bullets.

Actions: firing 1 shot, then dropping behind cover

Aaron "Demolition Man" Hudson took just a moment to carefully line the truck up with the Terminator. He also got the driver's side door loose, so he could just shove his weight against it and it would open.

"This one's going to hurt like a mother."

With that, he stomped the gas pedal as far down as he could, right after shifting into drive.

The truck roared towards the trundling machine.

Aaron kept one hand on the charge; it wouldn't do to have it explode in the truck.

After just a few seconds, that also felt like an eternity, he knew it was time.

Just a couple seconds before the vehicle impacted, Aaron threw himself against the door and out of the vehicle. He tried to make sure he rolled with the impact, lessening his chances of major injury as much as possible.

Actions: Point truck at robot. Go as fast as possible at robot. Jump out of truck before impact. Hope I don't die.

Ezra raised up a bit, hoping to see what was going on. By God I hope we bring this big bastard down. That fact it took a group so long and so much to possibly bring the thing down didn't bode well for the remnants of humanity. They couldn't mass produce and they weren't nearly so tough. We have to be a helluva lot more creative and adaptable though. He hoped, anyways.

Ezra [22] (Readied action)
Elana [24]
Chad [20]
Aaron [25]
T-1 [???]

Ezra peeked over the car and watched as the T-1 started backing out of the alleyway but that wasn't the only thing attracting his attention. At the end of the parking lot he could see a pick-up with smoking tires starting its collision course with the machine. What was more, he could see that the car they were hiding behind was in the direct path of that course.

From her cantage point, Elana looked down the sight of her assault rifle and squeezed off a single bullet but her aim was off and the shot richoted off the pavement harmlessly into the rubble behind.

Chad was somewhat oblivious to the oncoming car crash and he was still pumping lead pellets into the Terminator causing it to commit to its escape plan and keep on rolling out.

Just then Aaron put the pedal to the metal and with screeching tires the pick-up was off. The pavement was rough and junk that had been scattered all over the place was caught by the on-rushing wheels. Aaron tried wildly to evade the worst pieces so the tires would hold while at the same time trying to retain maximum speed. Mister Demolition Man saw the enemy machine turning as it tried to perceive this new sound and assess its threat.
There was no turning away though and Aaron propped the door open with his foot, no small feat at these high speeds where the door is inclined to remain shut, and then left the vehicle prematurely before it was brought to a standstill. He rolled along the pavement keeping the explosives close to his person.
He came to a stop quickly and saw just the same as Elana did. The car had run into the machine and was dragging it across the tarmac towards the cover position that Chad and Ezra were hiding behind. Unlike Aaron though, she could also see that Ezra had been able to grab Chad and was halfway to getting the hell out of dodge. When the pick-up slammed into the parked car he and Chad simply dropped to the ground.

For a moment it was quiet.

Aaron knew he was the first to act, having the explosives in hand, but when he placed his hands on the ground and tried to lift himself up, he felt pain shooting through his side. The fall had by no means been a walk in the park but the short burst of adrenaline had taken care of ignoring most of the pain but this was too much too handle. He dropped himself back down and turned his head to look at the location of the pain. A bar of metal, slightly twisted, poked through his side into the air.
The scream of pain was all that the others could hear from Aaron's position but it elicited a response straight away. Elana's view of the smoking wreckage confirmed that the machine wasn't moving. Chad and Ezra could see that sprinting away at the last second had been a smart move as the car they'd been hiding behind had moved ten feet and lay tipped over on its side. The pick-up was a mangled mess and somewhere in between it was possible to make out some of the parts of the terminator that had scared the bejeezus out of the team.

A second scream from Aaron brought the everyone's attention back to the present and alarmed everyone that the Demolition Man had undergone some demolition himself.

Elana brought the M-16 up to her shoulder and squeezed the trigger, but saw a puff of dust as the M-16's round struck the ground.

Before she could think of firing again, the hispanic woman heard the car. It came around the corner, appearing into view and screaming ahead. It's engine was revved up to all the RPMs it could muster and Elana briefly saw Aaron's face through the windshield. She saw it roll over some chunks of metal and break chunks of glass. As it got closer and closer to the treaded Terminator, Elana's heart began to truly race, she couldn't keep her eyes off it.

The car slammed into the Terminator, beating in the hood of the vehicle and dragging the Terminator along with it forward where it slammed into the other car just as Ezra grabbed Chad and scrambled a few feet away.

The impact throw the car serving as the anvil onto it's side with a loud screeching sound and a gush of smoke and dust thrown into the air.

Then...all was silent. The rattling of the machine guns, the screeching of the cars, it was all gone, a bizarre silence filled the air.

Elana stared at the cars for a moment, but couldn't see the Terminator clearly. Her heart was racing, and her eyes wide. A bead of sweat rolled down her neck but she barely even noticed. She squinted at it, but that didn't help.

Had it worked? Was the Terminator dead?

Then she heard the first scream.

Looking back towards the north, Elana saw Aaron. He tried to get up, but ended up on the ground again, lying in the open between the two lanes of junked cars. The scream was a carnal agony of pain and it set off every alarm bell in her mind. Aaron had probably saved their lives and now it sounded like he was in real trouble.

Still holding the M-16, Elana began to scramble off the heaped cars onto the ground.

"Aaron!" she shouted to the north, then yelled south. "Ezra! Aaron's hurt! It looks bad, get up here, hurry!"

She climbed off the metal pile as fast as she could, stepping on metal frames and other stepping stones until her feet touched broken glass and pavement. Gripping the M-16 with both hands, her blue uniform now cut and scraped by metal and discolored by chemicals and ash, she began to run as fast as she could towards Aaron.

Once she got to him, Elana laid down the M-16 and tried to see what was wrong and what she could do to help.

Actions: run to Aaron, begin diagnosing and treatment (with Ezra)

(OOC: I'm not sure how much I can do this round, so if getting to Aaron takes the entire round, then that's all she does)

Nothing could go right. Not a damn thing. But what did he expect in a world in such machines nuked everything to hell and gone? Not a whole lot. Leaving Chad where he was the doctor moved around the rubble to get to Aaron and his scream. "I'm on it!" he yelled back. He didn't move quite as quick as he might have though, eying suspiciously the wreckage with the Terminator. It'd taken a helluva lot of punishment before going down and he wasn't entirely convinced it was dead.

Back in Virginia his family went hunting quite often. They'd even taken trips to other parts of the country to hunt. In Texas, while hunting wild boar, they'd managed to drop a beast of specimen. His father's friend had moved to take a picture with the damned thing when it got up and barreled into him. The father-son duo had pumped another few pounds of lead into the big bastard and their friend had only walked away with some bruised ribs and wounded pride. Unlike said boar, this metal bastard had guns and plenty of ammo. If he made a second showing someone could end up dead.

So carefully he made his way to Aaron, but once he got there he did all he could to assess the damage - questions flew: where did it hurt, was it a stabbing pain, was it tender here or there, can you move this, ect. He didn't have much on him but he'd do what he could to help the guy.

The first thing Aaron felt was "relief". He was still alive, now he just needed to get up and-

PAINPAINPAIN.

"AAAAGH! Oh god!"

He looked down...and saw his side.

"Oh...oh good lord...oh..."

He reached down, gingerly, touching the wound-PAIN!!!

"GRAH! NGH! PAIN!"

He sees Elena crouching over him. He weakly shoves the explosives at Elena.

"Take them...gotta be sure..."

Then Ezra pops over him. Asking what was wrong.

Aaron's temper snapped, and he reached up, grabbed Ezra's shirt, and dragged him just a few inches away. (OOC:No grapple, just flavor.)

"Use your eyes! I've got a goddamn bar of metal through my goddamn side! What the hell do you think is freaking wrong!"

Actions:
Make sounds of pain.
Give explosives to Elena.
Tell Ezra where it hurts.

As Elana lifted the explosives in her arm she could see the charge had been primed and that Aaron was quite lucky they hadn't gone off yet.

At about the same time, Ezra's power of diagnostics concluded to him that Aaron's pain was related to a metallic object of about eight inches long puncturing the mechanic's right side. The damage, however, seemed more or less superficial until he could investigate whether any internal organs had been hit.
Seeing Aaron consciously struggling with the pain at least gave the doctor hope that his patient wouldn't go into shock just yet, but when the adrenaline wore off that might be a completely different story. Opening the medical kit he kept one "stick" of morphine handy just in case, then found the iodide and a cotton ball and quickly went about disinfecting the wound before going to the procedure of removing the bar.

Elana took the explosives from Aaron, then said, "Aaron calm down, calm down, we're here to help you, you need to lie still before that thing punctures something important ok? Let the doctor work."

Taking the explosives from him, she added, trying to sound as reaffirming and calm as possible, "I got it, I'll take care of it, just lie still, you did great Aaron, you saved our asses, just lay down."

Over her shoulder, she yelled, "Chad, come give Ezra a hand."

Aaron's wounds looked pretty bad to her. A few days ago, she would work to stabilize the patient, call an ambulance, and let the ER deal with it. Now, they had to do everything on their own. That, more than anything, made her nervous. She tried to bottle up that nervousness, revealing it would do no one any good. In any case she knew that removing that rod was going to hurt like hell, and the risk of internal injury was high.

Speaking of nervousness....Elana's gaze went down to the explosive in her hand. It was armed, primed and ready to blow.

"I need to get rid of this explosive, I'll be right back," Elana declared to Ezra. "Doc, focus on getting him stable enough to carry him to the bus, in case more trouble shows up."

Slinging her M-16 over her shoulder, Elana carried the explosive in both hands and began to walk towards the Terminator. She tried to be gentle with the explosives and didn't run.

If the Terminator was certifiably dead, meaning torso and head crushed and machine guns destroyed, she would disarm the explosives some distance from her friends. If the Terminator's frame seemed intact at all, she would place the explosive on it, double-back towards the others and prepare to set it off remotely.

Actions: walk to Terminator, get a closer inspection of it's condition, if intact, place explosives on it
